Are You Over 40? Do You Have A Challenging Time To Lose Weight Permanently?
“My days are very hectic. I’m always on the go. There is too much to do.” Is that you? And: If you’d like to lose weight permanently over 40, has this life-style something to do with permanent weight loss?
Stress can be positive. We feel energetic and powerful when stress hormones flood our bodies. Short time stress is good- but being stressed out day in and day out can make you sick: Heart attacks, diabetes, high blood pressure are related with stress.
Additionally, you can’t lose weight permanently if you are stressed- stress makes you fat. Never-ending stress encourages fat deposits on your stomach and your hips- stress fat. Stress fat is the body’s energy pool to respond physically in stressful situations. This was very useful for our ancestors, facing natural challenges.
Unfortunately, nowadays our reactions to stressful situations do not need to be physical any more- we do not have to run away from or fight wild animals. Our problem solving mechanisms need to be mental. The stress fat accumulates on and in our bodies, without getting burned. For women over 40 stress fat peculiarly hightens the risk of high blood pressure, higher cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, strokes and heart diseases.
In stressful situations the adrenal gland releases adrenalin. The blood sugar rises and the metabolism slows down so there is more energy accessible. Under permanent stress you burn fewer calories, preventing you from losing weight permanently. The changing blood sugar levels will result in feeling hungry- so you’ll eat more while burning less calories.
When you are under stress, the hormone cortisol is released. It affects your muscles, bones and the immune system. Your risk to get an infectious disease is enhanced, muscle mass reduces and bone density is getting less.
Cortisol has another dangerous effect lowering your ability to lose weight permanently. The body’s energy storage is filled up when your stress level is reduced. In this situation, Cortisol wakes up your appetite and gives you a voracious appetite. Have you ever observed that in stress-reducing, slowing down phases you don’t want vegetables or fish, but high-calorie food, like sweets, ice cream, chocolate or cookies?
Fat cells become more sensitive to high cortisol levels when they are longer exposed to cortisol. The amount of fat cells increases because of this process, making it tougher for you to lose weight permanently.
The equation is: constant stress = never-ending hunger + low metabolism. As we grow older typically our responsibilities increase, and with the duties comes stress. You need to decrease your stress level if you want to lose weight permanently over 40.
If the stress level is high losing weight permanently is particularly tough for women over 40. Stressed out women over 40 tend to have periods when they are eating too little, and periods when they are eating too much. This leads to fluctuating weight making it challenging to lose weight permanently for women over 40.
