Cardiovascular disease
One of the risks of being overweight is suffering cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is a disease in which blood circulation and the heart do not function normally as they do. Usually, the arteries become hardened and narrowed down. In consequences, you might suffer from heart attack, hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, stroke, congestive heart failure, angina (chest pain) or abnormal heart rhythm. In some cases, cardiovascular disease might cause fatal death. For example, in a stroke, blood and oxygen do not flow as normal to the brain, possibly causing paralysis or death.
Type 2 diabetes
Being overweight increases the risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes. Normally, our body continues to grow new cells to replace dying cells. This process is controlled to maintain a balance in the body, called metabolism. Cancer is developed when cells begin to grow abnormally because these cancer cells have the ability to spread to other parts of the body in multiplying form, which out of our control.
Being overweight increases the risk of developing cancer. Gaining weight increases the risk of breast, prostate, gallbladder, liver, and colon cancer. Excess fat increases the risk of breast, colon, ovary, endometrial carcinoma and prostate cancer.
Gout and Osteoarthritis
Gout is a joint disease caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood, and it is commonly occurred among those being overweight. The uric acid forms into crystal masses or solid stone which will then be deposited in the joints, causing extreme pain and might disable you from walking.
Another disease that hits the joints of people being overweight is osteoarthritis. It normally affects knee, hip, and lower back joints due to the extra pressure brought by the body’s extra weight. That is why you need to join a program for weight loss to decrease the risk of these diseases.
Sleep Apnea
Those people being overweight normally have more fat around the neck which in turn make the airway smaller and breathing more difficult. Being overweight increases the risk of pregnancy complications especially for the mother. These include the risk for gestational diabetes: high blood sugar during pregnancy and pre-eclampsia: high blood pressure during pregnancy.
