Salt (refers to sodium here) is something that the body needs to function properly. Salt is important for water balance and nerve function, among many other physiological functions. We only need a small amount of it each day. Anyway, most people are eating too much sodium, around 4,000 to 6,500 mg daily. It is not only harmful to their health, but also cause expanding of their waistlines.

Most of the people over consume salt from snacking on a serving of most crackers, chips, canned food items especially soups and canned veggies, pickles, cheeses or salted nuts. Condiments like ketchup and salad dressings are packed with sodium or salt too. Not to mention the processed foods that can be easily bought in department stores, fast food items and most foods from restaurant.
How much of salt is okay? If you are choosing foods recommended for a healthy weight loss purpose, you really do not need so much of salt. Technically, anything below 2,300mg of salt a day is excellent. If you are already at risk of hypertension, diabetes and chronic kidney disease, then you should limit your salt to less than 1,500 mg a day. Continue Reading…
