Food as Medicine – Prevention is better than cure

How many of you consider yourselves to be perfectly healthy and fit? How many of you are not conscious about your weight? Everyone are. Though in different ways from each other.

Health and diet is not something that can be given enough time in our busy schedules. So the million dollar question is how to look slim and stay fit without spending more time on it?

By Diet Control of course. Oh, do not worry. Diet Control does not mean reducing your intake of food. It just means changing the food you eat. It does not alter the food quantitatively but qualitatively. Let me explain.

The food we consume is made up of many components. They are:

1. Fats

2. Carbohydrates

3. Proteins

4. Minerals

5. Vitamins

6. Crude fibres

7. Water

Out of these the most calories come from fat. Carbohydrates and proteins provide the same amount of calories.

Fat does get absorbed by our body and is burnt for providing energy. But the excess fat gets accumulated in our body. It mainly starts getting accumulated below the belly region. As many of you may have experienced, this is the fat that is most difficult to get rid of.

Crude fibres helps in reducing the fat in the diet. They do not provide any calories but helps in preventing constipation by absorbing water and helping in the bowel movement.

I can hear you telling me to get on with it and say about diet control. Yes, I will. But before that I would like to say that I am not going to talk about exercises. That does not come into this topic. It does not, however, mean you can achieve your hundred percent fitness with diet alone. Its impossible. You will just have to read an article on exercise along with this one.

Diet Control is just the taking in of a balanced diet. It means that either you will have to take in only the calories that you can burn or else eat your heart’s desire and burn all that food you take in.

The first would be easier to most of us, me included. Many people misunderstands this and starve themselves. It is much easier to avoid starchy and fatty foods.

1. Healthy eating habits

1.1. Meals per day

How many meals do you have daily? It may play an important role in your health. Having three or four meals a day is not a bad affair. But eating continuously spoils your digestion system even if you eat a little amount only. Eating at regular timings greatly helps.

1.2. Avoid junk foods

Eating inbetween meals mainly comprises of snack products and junk foods. I have seen people eating when they are working on a system, or while watching tv, when they are not hungry. This increases their chances of becoming obese not because the foods are overly fat but because the person consumes more as their concentration is elsewhere.

2. Health Foods

Healthy food should contain all the nutrients in the proper amount.

2.1. Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits contain the necessary nutrients along with fibres. They greatly reduce the body fat. Fruits are very important in diet control while fruit juices may not be as helpful. Its good to eat a fruit without making a juice out of it.

2.2. Milk

Natural cow’s or buffalo’s milk is rich in fat, proteins, carbohydrates and calcium. It is a very important part of a child’s diet.

Many people are of the view that milk adds to their obesity. There are varieties of packeted milk which contains different amounts of fat. For example, skimmed milk contains less than 0.5% fat.

2.3. Egg

Egg contains many nutrients. The egg white is not only protein rich but also contains all the essential amino acids. The yolk contains fat. This should be avoided if you are above forty years of age or over-weight.

2.4. Water

Though some people may laugh at this most people are still unaware of the qualities of plain drinking water.

One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% dieters. It will also help in better absorbtion of crude fibres and bowel movement. Some may ask what is the connection between bowel movement and weight reduction. It is nothing to do with weight reduction, but fitness.

Most of the readers, that is, those who have not left already, would be bored by now. So I conclude this article by saying that food is the best medicine. Our forefathers have used it and they were healthy enough (I meant that most of them were not over weight). No offence to the medical practitioners and the pharmaceutical companies, but food is the best medicine.
