Spirulina- a VERY old friend

The oldest life form

Spirulina is an edible blue green alga.  At up to 70% complete protein (the highest in the plant kingdom), with a wide range of nutrients, amino acids and antioxidants it is as close to a complete food you will find in nature. A totally natural product, it has been used as a staple for years in some parts of Africa and South America, where it was prized for its health giving properties, but there is more. Did you know that blue green algae are the direct descendants of the second oldest living creature on Earth?

While blue green algae are named as algae, many scientists classify them as a type of bacteria called cyan bacteria (cyan means blue green colour). What looks like a large mass of green consists of billions of microscopic single celled creatures. In fact they are the evolutionary bridge between the very first living things to appear on earth, bacteria, and the appearance of plants.

These bacteria, sometime around 3.5 billion years ago were the first to begin feeding by photosynthesis (the method by which plants feed), they were the first organisms to colonize earth and they are responsible for the oxygen rich atmosphere we enjoy today.

This incredibly tough organism survived the toxic environment and began increasing the aount of oxygen in the atmosphere.

Before the coming of blue green algae the Earth’s atmosphere consisted of gases where only specialised bacteria could survive.

There are indications that Spirulina is also related to the oldest of all these alga as it does not contain cellulose in its cell walls, making it more easy to digest and absorb the nutrients. Ever wondered why humans can’t eat grass? Too much cellulose in their cell walls, animals such as a cow has several stomachs to digest the food.

Why this is important for health.

The human body evolved from bacteria, to Alga, through other types of plants, into animals in the sea, to animals on land, to primates, on and on until we reach the human body as we have it now. Through that time the body evolved to utilise the food sources around it and learned how to use components of the food to make its body healthy. So think about this:

We have been eating potatoes as a staple for maybe 300 years.
We have been eating wheat as a staple for maybe 6,000 years
We have been eating meat for possibly 1.5 million years
We have been eating land vegetables for maybe 300 million years.

But life on Earth has been eating blue green algae since the first fish and invertebrates (animals like snails, worms, that don’t have a backbone) emerged 543 million years ago.

They were a principal food source though the evolutionary process for 500 million years. That’s a lot of time for it to become genetically intertwined with our bodies, and this is why Spirulina contains rare nutrients that are difficult to find anywhere else, and one of the reasons it is so nourishing.

Blue green Algae today grows everywhere, some can double their size every day. They were a principal food source for some human societies up until a couple of hundred years ago and are still the principal food source for many animals, including Whales.
