Dental Surgery refers to various kinds of medical processes which constitute artificially modifying dentition or rather, the development and arrangement of teeth in the mouth.

Dental Surgery comprise mainly of Tooth extraction, Dental implants or Root Canal procedures.

The various kinds of Dental Surgery are:

1. Endodontic surgery – Endodontic surgery is the type of dental surgery that involves the pulp of the tooth

2. Root Canal  surgery – There are three kinds of root canal surgery namely; Pulpotomy, Pulpectomy and Apicoectomy

3. Prosthodontics - Prosthodontics involves the placement of Crowns, Veneers, Bridges, Implants, Dentures and Implant-supported Prosthesis.

Crowns— Crowns are artificial coverings of the tooth made from various kinds of bio-compatible materials such as ceramic/porcelain metal composite, gold or a tin/aluminum mixture.

Veneers — Veneers are artificial coverings that are similar to crowns. However, they only cover the forward surface of the tooth.

Bridges — Bridges refer to fixed prothesis in which two or more crowns are joined together. They act as a replacement or a substitute for a missing tooth and are used after an extraction.

Dental Implants —Implants refer to a process in which a titanium implant is surgically placed in the bone, i.e. the Mandible or Maxilla and is allowed to heal. Four or six months later, an artificial tooth is joined to the implant by using cement or tightened by a screw.

Dentures— Dentures refer to a partial or entire set of dentition which is either connected to neighboring teeth using metal/ plastic grasps/ gingival or palatial surface using an adhesive.

Implant-supported prosthesis — Implant-supported prosthesis could be defined as a combination of dentures and implants. In thisp process, bases are positioned within the bone. After they heal, metal appliances are attached to the gingival surface . Later, dentures are placed atop and fixed into place.

4. Tooth Extraction — Extraction refers to a procedure in which a problematic tooth is removed, either by pulling or cutting it out.

5. Fiberotomy Fiberotomy is a procedure that involves cutting out the fibres around a tooth, thus preventing it from relapsing.
